The procurator has asked the hotels located along the Caribbean coast to NOT take possession of the beaches, which by law are public.Our reporters obtained a video of how tourists are being expelled from a beach close to an hotel in Santa Marta.”The concession that the Hotel has .. that is the rules of the hotel … prohibit tents”
This is how the private security of the Hotel Irotama and the Santa Marta police moved a group of tourists out of the beach and prohibited the installation of umbrellas.”according to the policies of the hotel, tents are prohibited”
The argument over the restriction was a supposed concession given to the Hotel.Once informed with the incident and to avoid recurrence the Government and Procurator reminded the hotels and authorities situated along the coasts that:
“The beaches are available to any Colombians for their use and enjoyment. This case has to be examined in detail, because such a situation cannot happen”"We are informing you about the right the hotel has over the beach” (And my right)General Procurator “Beaches along the coasts of the Caribbean and Atlantic are property of the nation, private occupation is prohibited”
In this case the private entity (the Hotel), said that it was not their policy to evacuate non-guests.
Saul Velasquez (Security Manager Hotel Irotama) “Since the beach is public, we allow free entry to the beach. In the case of the hotel environments, those are controlled by the guards”
The matter does not only concern the national government and the controlling entities… in fact some members of the community have asked for actions. “That awarded concession is for cleaning, some management & security, but in no way has the DIMAR authorized them to impede the access to regular citizens”
Precisely this week the procurator will finish a detailed report about beach zones that individuals have tried to privatize not only in Santa Marta but also in Cartagena and in Barranquilla. Read More...
